We are delighted to announce that the Office of International Education Services (IES) has been renamed as the Center for Global Engagement (CGE) effective January 1, 2021. The name change reflects feedback received from the campus community and more closely aligns with the names of comparable units at peer institutions.
IES has served our campus community for more than three decades. Its original mission was to provide immigration services to international students. As campus needs evolved, the unit’s scope expanded to include services for international employees, coordination of study abroad programs, and support for international partnerships.
The new Center will continue to provide all services currently offered by IES. It will also serve as a central resource for students, faculty, and staff engaged in international activities and a coordinating hub for various initiatives that support UMBC’s standing as a globally engaged public research university. It is envisioned that CGE will not only ensure the application of best practices for supporting global engagement, but it will also serve as a pre-eminent model of comprehensive internationalization within the University System of Maryland and among public research universities in the United States.
The Education Abroad Office is excited to be a part of the Center for Global Engagement and to continue to support our campus and global community!
