In celebration of 20 years of ADVANCE at UMBC, please join us for a screening of the compelling documentary “Picture a Scientist” with discussion and closing remarks by President Sheares Ashby on Friday, October 21, 2-4:30pm in PUP 105. We welcome students, staff, and faculty to attend. Please kindly distribute this email and registration link throughout your networks.
PICTURE A SCIENTIST chronicles the groundswell of researchers who are writing a new chapter for women scientists. Biologist Nancy Hopkins, chemist Raychelle Burks, and geologist Jane Willenbring lead viewers on a journey deep into their own experiences in the sciences, ranging from brutal harassment to years of subtle slights. Along the way, from cramped laboratories to spectacular field stations, we encounter scientific luminaries – including social scientists, neuroscientists, and psychologists – who provide new perspectives on how to make science itself more diverse, equitable, and open to all.
All students, staff, and faculty are invited.
Light refreshments will be served.
This event is co-sponsored by ADVANCE and the PROMISE program.
